A Grandpa Selling Soaps = Millions of Views?
A grandpa on TikTok who made thousands of sales selling….
Soap. Who knew soap could make the TikTok money printer go BRRR?
I have been pretty obsessed with what makes things go “viral” for the past few months. I could vomit so much on the logical tactics, science, math blah blah blah, contemplating writing a book on it to just get it all out of my mind lol.
But that is boringgg
So let’s understand why this Grandpa who sells soaps went ballistic on TikTok.
(Also this is a great excuse to watch TikTok right now for both you and I :) )
Let's unravel the stats (Here is the video)

8.9M views 2M likes 40 seconds long
Now for the quick breakdown of what made this video POP!
The opening is unique, on-brand, and has bright colors. He’s wearing a cool shirt with a peach on it and holding a soap with what seems to be peaches as well.
It’s also polarizing and makes the viewer ask “Why is a grandpa on TikTok? Why is he holding soap? and why is everything peach themed?”
This is great, the “Sensory adaptation” of the person was successfully broken!
So the thumb stops, now what made them stay?
The song in the background and his voice made it a soothing atmosphere, TikTok is where people go to escape and this was a great environment of calmness to enter.
Then in the 3rd frame, it was cut to ASMR soap cutting, a broad range of people enjoy this type of content, and watch time is high due to the satisfaction it gives to the viewer.
Although what made the video go far and got all of the engagement and I would also argue a lot of sales was his story on his late wife sue.
This was no longer a soap ad, but a video to honor his late wife who loved peaches, and a reflection on family memories
As a byproduct, these emotions get passed on and are associated with the soap psychologically speaking.
Which is the reason why over 100k people commented they were going to buy.
Some takeaways for you to apply in your next TikTok
-have a polarizing opening, add things an audience wouldn't expect to be on TikTok. A style of filming I think really catches the eye on TikTok is “Avant Garde” styled videography.
-stack the video with multiple viral tactics ASMR+Good Storytelling+Polarizing Opening
-If you are selling a product, attach an authentic larger meaning to it that people can get behind and react too
-Tell imagery-based stories while doing something eye-catching, One tactic I have been seeing a lot is making double screens to increase retention in speaking videos!
Also, thinking about starting up a new TikTok and growing a brand from scratch then breaking down the whole process, would y’all like to see that? Let me know!
